Gym

Attributes

There’s only one viable way to be strong in a battle, And that’s by training in the gym. You can train at the gym as soon as you start, and you will be given 4 choices of attribute to train:

  • Strength
  • - Strength makes you hit your opponents harder in battles. The more strength you have the more damage you do. Each weapon will do more or less damage depending on your strength. The better weapons will do more damage for each strength point you have.

  • Dexterity
  • - Dexterity makes it harder for your opponent to hit you. In battle your opponent will need more speed than your dexterity to be able to consistently hit you it is worth remembering that no matter how high your dexterity it is still possible for people to "lucky hit" you. Lucky hits usually occur somewhere in the vicinity of once every 15 hits, but are a random event. Dexterity also affects how easily you can break people out of jail. The more you have the easier it is to bust people.

  • Speed
  • - Speed increases the chance of you hitting your opponent. You will need a similar amount of speed as their dexterity to have a good chance of hitting them. The more speed you have, the easier it will be for you to hit them consistantly.

  • Defence
  • - Defence makes your opponent hit you for less damage. The more you have the less damage your opponent will do. Armour can also help reduce the damage inflicted by opponents, but, like equipping weapons it may also affect your speed and dexterity in a negative way. It is also worth remembering that in order to use defence as an effective strategy you will need considerably more defence than your opponents' strength. As it stands, the highest weapon's multiplier is 2.5 (the anti tank) and the highest armours multiplier is 0.5 (bodyguard). This means that in order to block your opponents hit, your defence needs to be as much as 5 times their strength. Even this does not allow for the possibility of critical hits which sometimes can be as high as 3 times a standard hit.

Gyms

There are two gyms in torn city. Your first gym is Woody’s, costing $100 for membership, and it is the only gym you can use until level 10. At level 10 you can buy a member ship for Average Joe’s.

These two gyms let you train the same attributes, however Joe's will take 10 energy, and give you double stat gains as opposed to Woody’s, which costs 5 energy. It may not seem beneficial, however both gyms will take the same amount of happiness. Happiness is a huge key to how much of a stat you will gain - the higher your happiness the bigger your gains. Average Joe's then trains 10 energy for the same amount of happiness that Woody's will train 5.

Optimal Training

It is very important to watch how you train, and it can be done in such a way to maximize your happiness at all times. The gym will rotate how much happiness is taken away for each training session, starting on 3, then reducing to 2 and 1, then back to 3.

As you get 5 happiness every 15 minutes then you want to only train once when you will be penalized 3 happiness per training, twice when its 2 and 5 times when its 1. Then wait for the 15-minute mark to regain that 5 happiness. It is slow, but it does make a big difference in the long run. Especially as stat gains also depend on how much of that stat you have already.

Stat Strategy

So now you may be thinking 'how should I train?' Lets face it, there is no one set way. If you want to win a battle you must train speed. But without strength you wont do enough damage to kill them before they get a lucky hit. If they have defence you might not take enough HP off. They may have lots of dexterity, and very little speed, or the other way round. Unless you use the spy in the army job you wont know.

Luckily, there are some missions that require you to have a certain amount of speed. So you can estimate that most level 15s will have 3000 speed, as they will want the 800k from the mission. That means if you have 4000 dexterity you will be quite hard to hit, and you can train other stats afterwards.

What some people try for is a quick short battle. Since you always get the first attack, some people try to kill people quickly, preferably in one hit. To achieve this fast short battle, you must have very high strength, and speed. People who like this method must have high enough strength to take out all the opponent's hit points. They must also have high enough speed to be able to counter the opponent's dexterity. People who do this generally let defence go completely, and train some dexterity to help prevent them being killed.

Another strategy is to have so high dexterity and or defence your opponent will stalemate or lose before you. this is great to protect yourself from many attacks. However, this method makes battles long. It allows you to be better able to judge the stats of your opponent, because you should get some attacks in. This method is extremely uncommon because of its length however, if you want to do something unique, this may be a good method for you.

Jail

Stuck in jail? Fear not, you can still train. However you are limited to speed, strength and defence. It will cost all players 5 energy, regardless of which gym membership they have. Its not advisable to train in the gym if you're going to be around when you get out (or you think you will get busted) as you don’t gain happiness in jail.

There is a small bonus to the jail gym however - you get a lot more defence per training session compared to BOTH other gyms. In jail you cannot train your dexterity, this is because by using half of your nerve bar you can escape from jail. This gives you 0.1% of your dexterity, this usually works out as around 2 and a half trains worth.
