Nerve
When you start playing Torn City you will see 3 bars in the top left of your screen. One is green (Energy), one is blue (Happiness) and one is black (Nerve).

What is it for?
The nerve bar is very important. It is used to commit crimes. If you look on the sidebar to the left you will see a category that says "Crimes" it is between "Education" and "Search", when you click on crimes you will be taken to a screen that has a list of crimes you can commit to make money and gain crime experience.
How do you gain nerve?
You gain 1 nerve point every 5 minutes. So if you searched for cash it would take you 10 minutes to get those 2 nerve points back.

Crime Points
Crime points is a hidden value in torn city, a number you can't see. Every time you succeed at a crime you get crime points added to your total, and when you fail a % of these points are deducted. It is also possible to gain and lose crime points by participating in organized crimes within factions, these require no nerve points but must be joined from the factions page. Crime points must not to be confused with total experience (level points), which you also get for successful crimes, but never goes down. Crime points also help determine which crimes you can do, the higher your tally the better the crimes you can succeed at.

How to choose a crime
There are many crimes you can do, all with an associated nerve cost and crime points gain. You start with a 10 nerve bar, and should be able to search for cash - which costs 2 nerve. The more nerve a crime needs the harder it is likely to be, you need to have done a fair amount of easier crimes before you are able to easily succeed at harder crimes. Every time you get jailed you lose crime points, making it harder to succeed. With this in mind only move up crime when you feel you have done enough of the one before.
Failing may reduce your crime points so you have to drop down a crime to be able to succeed.

Nerve Bars
When your crime points reach a certain level you will be rewarded with the the ability to store an extra 5 nerve. The current largest nerve bar is 40. It is possible to lose nerve points as well as gaining them. If your crime points drop below the required amount for your nerve bar you will revert to your last nerve bar (for example if you have a 20 nerve bar and get jailed too much you will revert to a 15 nerve bar). Continuing to do crimes without getting jailed will allow you to re earn your previous nerve bar. It is also possible to increase your nerve bar using merits. This will increase the maximum amount of nerve you can store but will not affect your crime points.

Useful tips
You can get crime points for busting people out of jail.
Some crimes are easier to do than others, and have 0% chance of failing. Others earn you more money, but are easy to fail and may not give many crime points. These you really need to find out yourself, we can only provide hints:
Pickpocketing, sweetshop robberies, stealth virus and assassination crimes are good because generally you get enough crime experience, yet you get a fair amount of money as well.
Larceny, drug transporting, jewelery shop and robberies. aren't usually recommended crimes either because they give little or no crime experience (larceny) or are very difficult (jewelry shop), and should be skipped for crimes that give better experience. see the "crimes" tutorial for more information.
